Most importantly, the selected CTC were injected in 20 orthotopic replicate sites per patient at cell doses four orders of magnitude higher than those that we used to demonstrate tumorigenicity of sorted CD44+/CD90+ metastatic breast cancer cells in the identical animal model.14 This extraordinary cell dose was possible because the unique leukapheresis products allowed us to load an average of 2 billion cells/sample on the separation columns. The gene discussed is CD44; the disease is breast carcinoma.
