The World Health Organisation has defined diabetes as “a chronic disease that occurs either when the pancreas does not produce enough insulin, or when the body cannot effectively use the insulin it produces” (WHO, p. 1).20 There are two main forms of diabetes: type 1, which is also known as insulin dependent or childhood onset diabetes, and type 2, which is known as non‐insulin dependent.
