CD34 and acute myeloid leukemia: The growth advantage of leukemic cells over the normal hematopoietic stem and progenitor cells (HPSC) is linked to a perturbation in differentiation, metabolic and cell survival programming, as a result of a number of genetic and epigenetic defects.1, 2, 3 Transcriptome studies have demonstrated that the expression patterns of apoptotic and anti-apoptotic genes are significantly different between AML CD34+ cells compared with CD34+ cells derived from healthy subjects.4, 5
