When comparing the groups of severe (14) and non-severe (6) leptospirosis patients we found additional significant differences for surrogate markers that were not used initially in the definition of severe cases: thrombocytopenia (p = <0.001), neutrophilia (p = 0.01) and creatinine phosphokinase (CPK) levels (p = 0.009) which were significantly more pronounced in the severe cases compared to non-severe forms of leptospirosis.
