SNCA and Parkinson disease: The observation that both alpha synuclein and Aβ42 have antimicrobial activity and that the CsgA (Curli) protein expressed by some bacteria (as part of their extracellular biofilm matrix) promotes alpha synuclein fibrillar deposition in the context of Parkinson’s disease (Chen et al., 2016) may suggest a role for biofilm matrix components in the propagation of host amyloid fibrillization.
