Because of the presence of many different autoantibodies, SLE is classified as a “B-cell disease.” Circulating blood lymphocytes in SLE patients show a Th2-like profile (4); however, Th1 lymphocytes and interferon (IFN)-γ have been demonstrated to be important for the immune pathogenesis of SLE (5).
