It has been found that performing acupuncture at Zusanli (ST36) can have a hypoglycaemic effect in fasted rats with type-2 diabetes mellitus and also in obese women with a restricted caloric diet [37] and can also decrease the expression of neuropeptide Y (NPY) which is known to increase appetite by acting on the hypothalamus [38] and nitric oxide synthase in the periaqueductal gray matter area [39] of rats with streptozotocin-induced diabetes. The gene discussed is NPY; the disease is type 2 diabetes mellitus.
