The role of RARα in blood development is very important, as the fusion of the RARα gene with the PML gene, caused by a translocation t(15;17), initiates acute promyelocytic leukemia where differentiation of the myeloid lineage is blocked at a promyelocyte stage and followed by an uncontrolled proliferation of leukemic blasts [7]. Here, RARA is linked to acute promyelocytic leukemia.
