Alzheimer’s disease is postulated to be caused by the formation of senile plaques from the Aβ protein, a soluble, unstructured peptide cleaved from the membrane-embedded amyloid precursor protein (APP) by β and γ secretase enzymes to a length of 38–43 amino acid residues (Knowles et al. 2014).
