Studies at a cellular level and in animal models clearly indicate a role for Gal-1, -3, and 9 in regulating (positively or negatively) eosinophil recruitment and the pathogenesis of allergic asthma; however, further studies to elucidate expression patterns of these galectins in relation to different phenotypes and endotypes of allergic asthma in humans are necessary to define whether they can serve as disease biomarkers or therapeutic targets for pharmacological modulation.
