LGALS1 and Increased total eosinophil count: As detailed in this review, Gal-3 plays a pro-inflammatory role in allergic asthma by promoting eosinophil trafficking and migration, while Gal-1 exerts an anti-inflammatory effect due to its ability to limit eosinophil migration and induce apoptosis, wherein decreased expression or absence of this galectin results in increased eosinophilia and exacerbated asthmatic immune responses.
