Intravaginal exposure to a Cambodian ZIKV strain, FSS13025, in both wt and Ifnar1−/− mice demonstrated replication of the virus in the vaginal mucosa (higher levels were identified in Ifnar1−/− mice) which resulted in IUGR and fetal brain infection (wt mice) and severe IUGR and fetal death (Ifnar1−/− mice) [64]. The gene discussed is IFNAR1; the disease is fetal growth restriction.
