While there are presently no approved drugs targeting PTP1B [15], it has been hotly pursued as a drug target by many pharmaceutical companies and academic labs [15, 16] in the hope that an inhibitor of PTP1B could be developed as a drug for treating type II diabetes, which is anticipated to affect over 300 million people world-wide by 2030 [14, 17].
