Intraneuronal inclusions of hyperphosphorylated tau protein (neurofibrillary tangles, NFT), a common neuropathological finding in AD, are associated with neuronal and synapse loss and correlate with the extent of symptomology in patients (Uchihara et al., 2001) and animal models of AD (Götz et al., 1995). This evidence concerns the gene MAPT and Alzheimer disease.
