Until recently, CD62E was believed to be expressed solely by endothelial cells; however, Vainer et al. demonstrated that in colonic biopsies obtained from ulcerative colitis patients in the active stage of the disease, E-selectin is expressed not only by epithelial and endothelial cells of the luminal membrane but also by mononuclear cells [24].
