IgE-mediated allergy has an acute onset (within 2 h of exposure), and presenting symptoms are often respiratory, skin, and gastrointestinal in nature, whereas non-IgE-mediated food allergy has a delayed onset of symptoms (from 1 to 24 h), and the symptoms tend to be skin and/or gastrointestinal (24).
