SLC1A5 and central nervous system cancer: In cortical neuron cultures, D-serine uptake kinetics was consistent with ASCT2-mediated transport (Shao et al., 2009), and in C6 glioma cells, a significant correlation between D-serine uptake and ASCT2 mRNA expression was observed (Sikka et al., 2010), suggesting that ASCT2 may mediate D-serine uptake and be potentially involved in the regulation of D-serine levels in the CNS.
