One study that assessed a composite outcome of coronary heart disease, cerebrovascular disease, and peripheral vascular disease events demonstrated that both statins and ezetimibe were associated with reductions in the risk of the composite outcome.24 In addition, the new PCSK9 inhibitors, such as alirocumab or evolocumab, showed a reduction in LDL cholesterol levels when added to maximally tolerated statin therapy. The gene discussed is PCSK9; the disease is coronary artery disorder.
