MMPs are a family of primary enzymes that are implicated in ECM degradation.31 Dysregulation of MMP activity results in liver damage and even fibrosis.32 MMP-2 and MMP-9 are key factors in the MMP-mediated proteolytic degradation of the ECM and are stimulated by TGF-β1 during fibrogenesis.33 The synthesis and deposition of collagen play a pivotal role in liver repair and remodeling during the progression of liver fibrosis.30 In line with this, we suggest that overexpression of miR-130a-3p might repress collagen synthesis and deposition in fibrosing steatohepatitis. This evidence concerns the gene MMP9 and Hepatic fibrosis.
