In sepsis, various pathogen-associated molecular patterns (PAMPs) such as lipopolysaccharide (LPS), as well as damage-associated molecular patterns (DAMPs), can stimulate receptors on immune cells like macrophages and monocytes to trigger the release of early proinflammatory mediators (e.g., tumor necrosis factor-α (TNF-α), interleukin-1β (IL-1β), and interferon-γ (IFN-γ)) and the late mediator high mobility group box-1 protein (HMGB1) [5].
