MUC1 has previously been identified on the apical cell surface of epithelial cells, and is overexpressed in human carcinomas and hematologic malignancies in which it binds to caspase-8 and FADD, blocks caspase-8 recruitment, and thus prevents activation of the death receptor-induced extrinsic apoptotic pathway in cancer cells [2]. The gene discussed is MUC1; the disease is cancer.
