After adjustment for age, sex, duration of diabetes, HbA1c and nephropathy, higher levels of MMPs 1, 2, 3, 9 and 10, and TIMP-1 were significantly associated with all-cause mortality, with HRs of 1.62 (1.28; 2.06) per 1 SD higher lnMMP-1; 1.93 (1.48; 2.51) for lnMMP-2; 1.82 (1.38; 2.41) for lnMMP-3; 1.39 (1.14; 1.69) for lnMMP-9; 1.33 (1.06; 1.67) for lnMMP-10; and 2.10 (1.55; 2.85) for lnTIMP-1, respectively (Table 3, model 1).
