In metastases, vascular destabilization and accompanying angiogenesis enhance tumor growth (Folkman, 1990), upregulate growth factors such as vascular endothelial growth factor (VEGF) and Ang-2 (Veeravagu et al., 2007), metastatic potential (Fidler and Ellis, 1994; Claffey et al., 1996), and correlate with poor patient outcome (Weidner et al., 1992; Meitar et al., 1996; Uzzan et al., 2004). The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is neoplasm.
