ADIPOQ and age-related macular degeneration: Furthermore, genetic deletion of the adiponectin receptor 1 (AdipoR1), independent of the adiponectin cognate ligand, prevents DHA uptake, blunts NPD1 synthesis and results in ensuing photoreceptor degeneration that resembles certain retinal degenerative diseases.20 Moreover, it has recently been demonstrated that mutations on the DHA-retention determinant receptor AdipoR1 of photoreceptors leads to certain forms of retinitis pigmentosa21 and that a polymorphism of this receptor is involved in age-related macular degeneration in a Finnish population.22
