Due to the importance of DEK for these varied oncogenic phenotypes, the near-ubiquity of high DEK expression in most cancers [55], the similarity of phenotypes observed across tumor types [55], and the ability of the protein to be secreted by cells [56], DEK is currently being evaluated as a biomarker for bladder carcinoma and other malignancies [57].
