The disease-linked mutations generally occur in the low complexity (LC) domains of these proteins and increase the tendency of the proteins to aggregate, which will be discussed in a later section (Johnson et al., 2009; Liu-Yesucevitz et al., 2010; Kim et al., 2013); mutations in other ALS-linked genes also stabilize stress granule dynamics, including mutations in C9orf72, Valosin containing protein (VCP) and Cu/Zn Superoxide Dismutase (SOD1) (Buchan et al., 2013; Gal et al., 2016; Lee et al., 2016; Lin et al., 2016). This evidence concerns the gene SOD1 and amyotrophic lateral sclerosis.
