We also explored whether hypovitaminosis D could correlate with an increased inflammatory status in plasma—as it has been recently been described for healthy subjects [38]–but, even if our TB patients had elevated inflammatory markers and profound VD deficiency, none of the biomarkers analyzed in plasma (CRP, TNF-α, IL-6) correlated directly with VD levels, what may be explained by variations in the extension and severity of active TB disease.
