The role of MMP-2 and 9 in the process of renal fibrosis is actually similar to that of GFs, such as: the activity of MMP-2 in the early stage of CKD is increased and can degrade the type IV collagen in renal basement membrane; injures the glomerular filtration membrane; promotes the upregulation of TGF-β; and promotes the renal tubular epithelial phenotype transformation; all of these promote the development of fibrosis [62]. Here, MMP2 is linked to renal fibrosis.
