The encoded TMPRSS2–ERG fusion protein controls many important properties of prostate cancer cells, including cytoskeletal organisation, cell proliferation, expression of prostate-specific antigen (abbreviated PSA; this is a key serum biomarker for detecting prostate cancer) and epithelial–mesenchymal transitions (EMT) crucial for prostate cancer cell metastasis (Adamo and Ladomery 2016). The gene discussed is ERG; the disease is prostate carcinoma.
