Because cleavage of APP along the non-amyloidogenic pathway decreases with aging (Kern et al., 2006) and reduced APPs-alpha levels were found in CSF of some AD patients (Lannfelt et al., 1995; Sennvik et al., 2000), it is likely that insufficient APPs-alpha levels could contribute to the cognitive deficits of AD patients. The gene discussed is APP; the disease is Alzheimer disease.
