DRD2 and schizophrenia: According to this hypothesis of cortical/subcortical imbalance in schizophrenia, hypoactive DA neurotransmission in PFC, resulting in hypostimulation of DRD1, and negative and cognitive symptoms, leads to disinhibition of subcortical mesolimbic DA activity, resulting in hyperstimulation of DRD2 and positive symptoms of schizophrenia [159,181,182,183].
