In gastric cancer cell lines, expression of EBV-encoded latency I proteins BARF1 and Latent Membrane Protein-2A could trigger NF-κB activity and up-regulate thereby cyclin D1 and survivin, respectively, which rescued EBV-infected epithelial cells from some types of apoptosis and facilitated cancer progression [65,66]. The gene discussed is BIRC5; the disease is gastric cancer.
