Although follow-up experiments revealed that AST was consistently elevated in patients with liver disease (Wróblewski and LaDue, 1955[74]; Jervis et al., 1956[26]), it was found that ALT is a better indicator of liver damage because, unlike AST, its activity is much greater in liver than in muscle (LaDue and Wroblewski, 1956[34]).
