Similar to other members of the LIV-1 subfamily of zinc transporters, estrogen can induce zinc influx through ZIP14 (26, 35, 36) and another zinc influx transporter, ZIP9, has recently been identified as an androgen receptor in human hormone-responsive breast and prostate cancer cells, with androgens stimulating ZIP9-mediated zinc influx (37, 38). The gene discussed is SLC39A9; the disease is prostate cancer.
