The A2AR and mGluR5 protomers synergistically counteract the D2R recognition and signaling in these complexes (Ferré et al., 2002; Fuxe et al., 2003) and combined treatment with A2AR agonists and mGluR5 agonists/positive allosteric mGlu5 modulators should be a novel promising strategy for treatment of schizophrenia (Wieronska et al., 2016) with or without the use of D2R antagonists. The gene discussed is ADORA2A; the disease is schizophrenia.
