miR-34a is predicted to target multiple genes implicated as genetic risk factors for BD, and the authors have validated a number of predicted mir-34a direct targets in the BD cultured neurons (ankyrin-3, ANK3 and voltage-dependent L-type calcium channel subunit beta-3, CACNB3; Hunsberger et al., 2013; Bavamian et al., 2015).
