We observed no significant difference between the number of NeuN-positive cells in either the DG or CA1 of the hippocampus in mice subjected to sham and transient forebrain ischaemia (Fig. 5c,d: sham vs. ischaemia in DG and CA1, respectively: 7978.34 ± 3978.34 cells/mm2 vs. 8216.54 ± 348.39 cells/mm2, p = 0.693; and 4669.31 ± 336.32 cells/mm2 vs. 4158.29 ± 46.56 cells/mm2, p = 0.187), indicating that neurons in these regions of C57BL/6 mice were tolerant of transient cerebral ischaemia in the present study.
