Thus, because PerC activates expression of the type III secretion system in EPEC through Ler (Mellies et al., 1999; Bustamante et al., 2001, 2011; Porter et al., 2005), we propose that PerC functions to preference expression of the type III secretion apparatus to enhance attaching and effacing lesion formation at the site of EPEC attachment, the distal small intestine, establishing a local infection.
