Interestingly, a single cell whole genome sequencing study for colon cancer identified an abundant amount of mutated gene SLC12A5 at the individual level, which was sparse at the bulk cells level, and discovered that colon cancer had a biclonal origin [77]. However, another study using single cell exome sequencing to reveal the evolutionary process in bladder cancer indicated that 66 individual bladder cancer cells were derived from a single ancestral cell, but they developed into two distinct tumor cell subpopulations with subsequent evolution [78]. Here, SLC12A5 is linked to malignant colon neoplasm.
