Two recent large cardiovascular outcome trials in patients with DM2 (LEADER with the Glucagon Like Peptide-1 [GLP-1] agonist liraglutide and EMPA-REG with the Sodium-Glucose Cotransporter-2 [SGLT-2] inhibitor empagliflozin) found significant reductions of cardiovascular risk with newer oral antidiabetic therapies but did not report on neuropathy endpoints [14, 15]. The gene discussed is GCG; the disease is myotonic dystrophy type 2.
