TG and hypothyroidism: Associated with a lower risk of developing recurrence of disease, total thyroidectomy has become the first-line treatment option for patients with Graves’ disease in developed countries.[8–9] Although total thyroidectomy prevents relapse of the disease, it renders patients postoperative hypothyroidism, even permanently, thus often adopted in compliance with postoperative thyroid hormone supplementation, which requires patients’ responsibility for lifelong self-administration.
