38. Ep+CIR cells formed few large sized spheroids compared to the majority of smaller ones, providing direct evidence for the presence of a heterogeneous population of EpCAM+ cells within the cirrhotic livers. Increased spheroid formation over repeated passages reflected the limitless proliferation capabilities of Ep+CIR cells. Further, unlike Ep+NSCs, Ep+CIR cells were capable of generating tumors when injected subcutaneously in NOD/SCID mice. Ep+CIR cells thus exhibited enhanced self‐renewal with uncontrolled proliferation and tumor formation, all of which are hallmark features of a CSC 39. The gene discussed is EPCAM; the disease is neoplasm.
