PLoS One recently published an article by He and colleagues entitled, “Transgenic Soybean Production of Bioactive Human Epidermal Growth Factor (EGF),” in which the authors propose that soybean seeds could be utilized as a biofactory for the production of therapeutic agents such as epidermal growth factor (EGF), which could then be delivered to infants in a soymilk platform for the treatment of diseases such as necrotizing enterocolitis (NEC) (159). This evidence concerns the gene EGF and necrotizing enterocolitis.
