Clear cell carcinoma is the most common subtype of renal cell carcinoma and it is frequently accompanied by loss of expression of the Von Hippel-Lindau (VHL) gene which is a tumor suppressor gene that suppresses hypoxia-inducible factor (HIF) resulting in down-regulation of vascular growth factor (VEGF) production. The gene discussed is VEGFA; the disease is clear cell adenocarcinoma.
