For example, in human intestinal cells CAV1 localizes asymmetrically, but the pattern varies by cell type: in human T84 colonic adenocarcinoma cells, CAV1 was observed only on lateral membranes (Nusrat et al., 2000); in human intestinal biopsies, CAV1 was found only on the basolateral surface (Badizadegan et al., 2000); and in Caco2 cells, CAV1 localizes to the apical plasma membrane (Field et al., 1998). This evidence concerns the gene CAV1 and colon adenocarcinoma.
