Nevertheless, the co-occurrence of autoimmune diseases has been reported, that is, systemic lupus erythematosus,4 multiple sclerosis5, 6 and autoimmune thyroiditis,7 as well as altered levels of circulating inflammatory cytokines, including interleukin (IL)-6, TNF-α, IFN-γ and IL1-β.8 A review of immunological factors in the pathophysiology of BD describes a major imbalance in inflammatory cytokines.9 These findings suggest the presence of immunological activation in BD of adult individuals.
