Yet, this discovery was not surprising for anyone aware of both (i) the evolutionary relationship of ZIP zinc transporters and PrP, and (ii) the fact that NCAM1 has repeatedly been shown to not only interact with PrP14, 26, 27, 28, 29 but represented the most prominent in vivo crosslinking partner of PrP in the neuroblastoma cell model14.
