It was developed for application in the setting of major elective non-cardiac surgery and estimates the risk of major postoperative cardiac complications until hospital discharge using six major components: the type of surgery (high vs low risk), history of ischaemic heart disease, history of congestive heart failure, history of stroke or transient ischaemic attack, history of diabetes requiring preoperative insulin and presence of preoperative renal impairment defined as serum creatinine >2 mg/dL (177 μmol/L).3 RCRI criteria are summarised in table 1.
