The possibility that leptin and adiponectin may also be relevant to vascular disease has been suggested by experimental studies showing that leptin promotes atherosclerosis and thrombosis in apolipoprotein E (ApoE)-deficient mice [5], whereas adiponectin has been shown to attenuate atherosclerosis in mice prone to develop atherosclerosis [6]. The gene discussed is APOE; the disease is atherosclerosis.
