Another large set of genes affected in PD skins involved the process of epidermal cornification and desquamation, as demonstrated by the suppression of 20 genes from the epidermal differentiation complex (EDC) including loricrin (the most abundant gene in the cornified envelope), members of the small proline rich proteins, the S100 protein family and late cornified envelope proteins. Here, ERVW-1 is linked to Parkinson disease.
