Nav1.8 and Nav1.9 contain a structural common motif of TTX-R sodium channel subtype that both of them are remarkably expressed in peripheral sensory neurons (Dib-Hajj et al., 2010; Yu et al., 2011), and are thought to play an important role in ectopic discharge in neuronal bodies and axons following peripheral nerve injury (Akopian et al., 1996; Dib-Hajj et al., 1998; Kral et al., 1998; Berta et al., 2008); these properties have identified them as potential molecular targets for analgesic drugs. Here, SCN11A is linked to peripheral nerve injury.
